Want to take part in a survey of Predation by Domestic cats? The survey aims to estimate the impact that domestic cats have on small and bird mammal populations. Similar surveys have been undertaken in a number of countries, as it is now thought that one of the biggest threats to biodiversity is the effect that alien species have on native populations (both animal and plant). A survey carried out by the Mammal Society in the UK estimated that cats alone kill 250 million small mammals a year. This survey will involve the co-operation of 100 cat owners, both in the Dublin area nationwide. The ideal participant would live in semi-urban areas such as towns, or the suburbs of Dublin. The survey consists of a series of questions, for example the weight of the cat, and a section in which participants can record what their cat/s have brought home, and the date. There will also be a section to aid the participant in identification of the prey item (for example, a mouse or a rat). The period of the survey will be 3 months (November, December 2002, and January 2003). If you are interested in participating in this survey contact, (Tania Constable) E-mail: constabt@tcd.ie Phone: 086 8966381 or 01 2875108 Or, at the Zoology Dept., Trinity College, Dublin.
