PROTEST

DATE: 22nd February 2001

VENUE: Assemble at US embassy Ballsbridge and March to UK Embassy.

TIME: 6 - 7pm.

Speakers will include Justin Kilcullen of Trócaire, Felicity Arbuthnot, journalist, Michael Doorly of Concern, Suzie Flood of AFrI, and Michael Birmingham of the Campaign to End Iraq Sanctions:

AFrI, the Campaign to End Iraq Sanctions, Concern Worldwide and Trócaire will call on the people of Ireland to show their opposition and outrage at the bombing of Iraq by US and UK forces Friday Feb 16th. Some of Ireland's leading development and solidarity groups will join together at the US Embassy this Thursday 22nd February, between 6-7pm to protest at this further harassment of the Iraqi people.

Over 24 US and British attack planes accompanied by a large number of "support" aircraft launched a massive bombing raid on Iraq on Friday 16th February 2001.This illegal bombing resulted in the deaths of 18 year-old Aliah Atshan Abdullah and 30 year-old Khalid Hameed Alwash of Baghdad and over 20 innocent civilian casualties, to date. Britain, France and the US with no mandate, clearance or resolution from the UN Security Council originally imposed the no fly zones on Iraq. France has since withdrawn its support for these no fly zones.

Mr. Justin Kilcullen, Director of Trocaire said that the latest bombing attack on Iraq was unjustifiable, unnecessary and counterproductive. 'At a time when the whole issue of the sanctions on Iraq is being revisited, this resort to violence by the US and UK is a backward step. It is a course of action, which has already failed to solve Iraq's many problems to do with freedom and human rights and is, in fact responsible for intensifying the suffering of the people of Iraq. The Iraqi people must not be made to endure further suffering on behalf of a leader whom they have not chosen', he concluded.

" In my opinion this is a terrorist attack carried out by the two rogue states on the UN Security Council, unsanctioned legally either by congress, parliament or the UN". Felicity Arbuthnot, journalist.

"This bombing is a violation of international law in terms of the human rights of the Iraqi people and the sovereignty of Iraq". Michael Birmingham, Campaign to End Iraq sanctions.

"These actions by the US and UK have no legality nor mandate. They are the kind of actions that you would expect from criminal organisations - not from so called democratic countries". Suzie Flood, Development Education Officer AFrI.
