Dear Minister,
I read with interest in yesterday's Irish Times, (30 Nov 99) that you
stated
that you would like to see a 50 pence increase in the price of a packet
of cigarettes.
I am presuming that this is because you believe that cigarettes damage
the health of smokers
and that a price increase may deter them from smoking.
Very commendable.
Might I remind you that there was a time when people believed that
smoking was not a health hazard, in fact as I understand it, beliefs
that it was good for you were common.
Now, regardless of whether or not one believes that smoking is good or
bad for the health, one still has a choice about whether to smoke or
not. Not so with ingesting fluoride. We are all forced, and I might add
will soon be forced to ingest higher quantities of this poison, through
your department's policy of fluoridating the public water supply.
I urge you, Minister, to allocate as much of the departments resources
as you can to researching and discovering the truth about this highly
damaging substance. I urge you, Minister to do this, so that you, and
your department will not look 'silly' when the public learns this truth.
I don't know, maybe you want to be laughed at in the future - 'Hah, hah,
there goes the man who thought fluoride was good for us' they will say.
I will write again shortly to see how the research is going. If you need
any help looking for accurate documentation on the proof of damage
caused by fluoride, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Minister, if you do not show me that you are putting some of OUR
resources into finding out the truth about fluoride, and generating an
open public debate about whether or not it is wanted, this, along with
your policy of taking natural medicines out of the reach of the people,
will force me to come to the conclusion that you are a very bad
candidate for the position of Minister for Health.
Sincerely,
Keith Whyte,
Hillside,
Bray Road,
Cabinteely,
Dublin 18.
